Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy) reached end-of-life on May 12, 2011 and
Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic) reached end-of-life
This bug is an upstream one and it would be quite helpful if somebody
experiencing it could send the bug the to the people writing the software. You
can learn more about how to do this for various upstreams at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream.
Once submitted upstream , do report back
... and can now confirm it is still the behaviour for a freshly
installed 9.10 system.

Can confirm it still occurs under 9.04 with Updates, but works correctly
under Fedora 11 -- haven't tried 9.10 yet, will add a comment to this
bug when I do.
I can open a bugreport upstream if it is still considered an upstream
issue.
