As you might know the 9600 GT is not supported in Hardy: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24/+bug/216636 So I tried all available options I found on the net. I can't remember if I installed first the nvidia-glx-new and later the nvidia-glx or vica versa.

I sincerely doubt that you need the 32bit compatibility libraries installed in /usr/lib64 which is just a symlink to /usr/lib. The required files are already in /usr/lib and the compatibility libraries are installed in /usr/lib32. Please reproduce the problem, then set the driver to nv in
