As cato speaks about root password, it is perhaps important to note for him
ubuntu does not set the root password.
You log in as yourself in eg Alt + F2 tty, then do sudo command to become root
as the main users (your own password).
As .kde folder is in your home directory you need not be root
It was working until today, december 3rd 2008.
I have GDM set to open a KDE session and also set to aoutomatically log
in as my user.
Then I logged in with a GNOME session for just some small things and I
accepted an update from the update manager.
And now I run in this nasty bug, I have the
KDE 4.2 is still in the beta stage, so it can't be released or even made
available via backports at the moment.
To work around this bug you can press alt + f2 and then run rm
~/.kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc. You could also run this from the
console.

If this is the same bug (I am 99% sure it is...), deleting your .kde amd
.kde4 folders from your home directory fixes it (and removes all of your
settings!).
I've had this bug on three different computers. I don't know if there
is a connection, but in all three cases, I had created a second
Fix committed for KDE 4.2.

did not like my tweaks
