Conor: this bug was only for GTK applications, I don't use KDE but believe it never stopped working (with SKIM). Regarding this bug in general, it's now fixed for me from a software update. Maybe someone noticed the bug and fixed it without seeing this report? At least for me this does not only affect firefox, but also gedit, openoffice and probably every other app using gtk. For some reason kde apps work w/o any problem... The workaround posted above works for me too.
