just change in audio preferences the sound capture item to Pulse Audio
Server, and it would work OK.
I can confirm that this workaround works also for me.

Have the same problem. Also haven't been able to get any program to
successfully 'record' or use sound (eg skype).
Tapping on the microphone does play back through the speakers. But can't seem
to use the 'recording' anywhere else.
Was working in Hardy, no longer in Intrepid.
