[Bug 281834] Re: KDE File Chooser for all GTK apps

2010-02-15 Thread dotancohen
GTK+ should provide sensible desktop integration, not the
 desktop toolkit integration.

Please elaborate on that statement. It seems that GTK+ is the language
that the application is written in, and it is up to the desktop
environment to make that application fit in to the rest of the desktop.
In fact, that is exactly why KDE was founded: to provide a common look
and integration with the existing applications.

Expecting _every_application_ to implement every desktop's tools is
ludicrous. Rather, it is up to the desktop to provide integration with
the limited number of common toolkits, such as Qt and GTK.

[Bug 281834] Re: KDE File Chooser for all GTK apps

2009-03-17 Thread Schmirrwurst
The problem with the GTK file chooser is that for user coming from windows,
they not only wonder why the picker is different, but also why the shortcuts
are no more here...
And I must say, even for me it cost a lot of time to search for the right
folder on gtk picker, when I've configured all the shortcurts I need under
KDE... To manage my places on both is also not a good solution...

I tried to look at revu.ubuntuwire.com, to look if someone allready
proposed kgtk as package, but ubuntu is currently frozen, so they won't
be any kgtk under jaunty ;-(

It's not so much that the file chooser is foreign, it's that it's clunky
and not as configurable as KDE's. I'm a naive just-use-it computer
user and I'd love to see this implemented.

I agree - if the GTK file chooser was a good as KDE's, I'd live with the
appearance. But it's really awful...

I should stress that this is a usability issue. The inconsistent File
Chooser dialogs confuse users. Users expect a uniform, consistent user
interface for all applications.

2008-11-10 Thread Willy K. Hamra
I must say i'm with Dotan on this one. it's very annoying to have such
inconsistency. a person who chooses to use KDE, is using it because he
thinks it's better than GNOME. he prefers KDE over GNOME means he likes
QT apps, he likes how things work, and like the KDE file chooser! but
unfortunately, one passes across a lot of GTK apps, and i expect that
these should follow the rules and looks of my favourite DE, KDE!

2008-11-10 Thread dotancohen
The link that usr provided (KGtk) is, by it's own description, a quick-
and-dirty LD_PRELOAD hack that allows some Gtk applications to use KDE's
file dialogs when run under KDE. Therefore I agree that KGtk is a great
place to start from, but more work needs to be done. Also, it should be
included in Kubuntu by default.
