Hei guys
I am new in ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty and I have just installed :

Kernel .6.28-13-generic (#44-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 2 07:57:31 UTC 2009)

I've posted a new version of the -nvidia driver to our xorg-edgers PPA,
would you mind testing it either on Jaunty or Karmic and see if it
resolves this bug?

apparently, i did not quite remove all the modules. even tho the nvidia
driver compiles the kernel module, apparently it doesn't get used unless
the other modules are removed. running 'apt-get remove --purge nvidia*'
beforehand did the trick. i now have 185.18.04 installed. however, i

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
but it didn't work. i am seeing this
It is true that I had to manually download the driver. It is still
experimental and not released into the repositories yet.
It works, and I have been waiting for a year and a half for a driver that
works properly. So, I can take the manual install!

it sounds like version 185 is working then? but if you try to download
the linux 64-bit driver from nvidia through the normal channel, they
only provide version 180. rather than manually download and install
version 185, when will it show up in the hardware drivers app, so it

Is there a fix yet. I to get a black screen with a 2px line on top of

Any work arounds or an estimate for a fix?

nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 package from nVidia, version 180.44.
This package provides fixes for a large number of bugs, and we need your
assistance in testing if it fixes the issue you reported.
To do this,

Have you tried the 180.29 drivers?
We had a laptop at work which either crashed or plainly didnt work with
any version of the nvidia driver shipped with Ubuntu 8.10 (64-bit
desktop). But downloading the absolutely latest drivers did the trick!
The drivers are here:
I have nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 from Intrepid updates repository
(180.11-0ubuntu1~intrepid1). The issue with one line initial screen
still has place (after computer reboot/power on). I use workaround with
X restart using vesa driver and another X restart using nvidia
driver. nvidia driver works

Same problem here. Kubuntu 8.10.
I have tried with both 177 and 173. I am sticking to the nv drivers

For what it's worth, the v96 drivers that were recently added to the
repositories seems to work, at least for me.
While not the latest, it at least doesn't require rebooting the X server
after each reboot of the system.
Since the latest drivers still don't work, I guess this bug should
remain
Yes, it's work for me too, but too slow to use compiz. And I also have
some weird artefacts in bottom part of gnome-terminal window even
without compiz. So I still use the workaround with 'vesa' driver after
reboot.

Thank you for the hint, it works for me too.
So if I don't reboot my desktop often I can restart X once after
