It was set to OpenGL. Once I changed it to default, the video did play.
Thanks for that suggestion. I still wonder though if the program should
segfault when that is set to OpenGL. The description above says I use
the nvidia driver, but more specifically, I'd like to mention it is an
NVIDIA
I let this report open since it is not normal that vlc crashes.
However, it have no crash using the openGL ouput with an ATI card.

I have problem to play the given movie with vlc (0.9.4-1ubuntu3).
Can you try to get a backtrace by following the instructions on
