I am also affected by this problem.
When the card is set in Monitor mode (either via iwconfig or through
another program) the applet shows no icon.
It is very difficult to click on the applet icon since it seems like
1-pixel wide!

I don't think it's the same as 290484.I don't see any icon, even
when sitting next to my WiFi router.Possibly, that difference is
accounted for because of some wireless misconfiguration, but it's hard
to tell.

Ah... It turns out that an update of ubuntu disabled my wireless in the
last few days.
So, yes, I agree this is probably the same as 290484.

Also, I think no network connection is somewhat confusing, nm-applet
should show something like no NM managed connection or something
similar, because there IS network connection just it's not managed by
NM, maybe.

I see the same thing. It's just updated intrepid yesterday and it no longer
works.
I purged and re-installed network-manager-gnome and network-manager
and reinstalled dbus and a couple of other plausible things.
ps indicates that nm-applet is actually running, but not displaying anything.
