please check /usr/share/doc/network-manager/README.Debian ... does that
give you the info you want?

2008-11-23 Thread howari
Alaxander, always wiped resolve conf? I have _never_ had any problems with it
before intrepid and i've used debian and then ubuntu well over ten years now.
But I can adjust to work differently. Just please tell me where should i
configure the adresses of dns:s now? So that whenever i do cat
/etc/resolv.conf those servers are listed there.

[Bug 292701] Re: network manager 0.7 clears /etc/resolv.conf file

2008-11-02 Thread Julien Aubin

** Attachment added: My /var/log/syslog - Bug occured at 17:25 on syslog...
   http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19240225/syslog

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: network-manager

On a PC with two network interfaces and no DHCP but only one static
connection, Network Manager often clears the content of the
/etc/resolv.conf file. This bug is really disappointing because one
could restart a computer and losing any internet connection until the
  /etc/resolv.conf file is rewritten.

Network still works, this is only a DNS problem.

Note that this bug does not occur in case there's only one network
interface on the PC with static connections. The issue is only there
with several network interfaces without DHCP. Currently I only have one
static connection established, my other network interface is down.

Thus the bug randomly occurs, not every time but once every five system
  boots I think.

  Workaround :
  - Copy the content of a correct /etc/resolv.conf file to
/etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/base seems to be sufficient.

  My configuration :
  - Kubuntu 8.10
  - Network manager 0.7 version 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1
+
+ EDIT : I think the wrong clear occurs when system halts but not sure.

NM properly supports resolvconf now. use its mechanisms if you want to
do something funky' or have issues with NM default dns handling.

I confirm this fix properly the issue. However this point should be
really documented in the upgrade notes because many people are
complaining.

julien, network always wiped resolv.conf so this is not an intrepid
regression. Its misunderstood that resolv.conf is not a safe place to
configure your dns. use resolvconf package with dns-nameservers in
/e/n/interfaces.
