This bug report is being closed because we received no reponse to the
last inquiry for information. Please reopen it if this is still an issue
in the current Ubuntu release. To reopen the bug report you can click
on the current status, under the Status column, and change the Status
back to New.
Please retest against Gutsy. We've made several improvements/fixes in
monitor resolution detection.

I also had this problem with an nvidia-based system. I can't run xrandr
(because I'm using a dual-head setup).
I manually added my desired resolution (1400x1050) on each of the Mode lines in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf like this:
SubSection Display
Depth 24
I had Dapper installed on my desktop and it worked great but I had some
problems with my Hard drive so I wiped and did a clean install of Edgy.
My computer came up in 1600 x 1200 resolution at 86Hz. I wanted to drop
down in resolution, but it hangs for about 15 seconds then give me the
login
Please confirm if this issue still persists in Dapper Final.

There is only one resolution available in Dapper Final, and only one
refresh rate.
