[Bug 294667] Re: Unkown symbol while loading iwl3945
This problem does _not_ happen for kernel 2.6.27-9 from intrepid- updates. It still does for 2.6.27-10 from intrepid-proposed. This suggests that the updates repository is better looked into than the proposed one, which is somewhat encouraging. Also, my dirty trick 2b of comment 23 can be used again (with 2.6.27-9 and 2.6.27-10 instead of 2.6.27-7 and 2.6.27-8, respectively), should you want to use 2.6.27-10 for any reason. Yep, I had noticed this both for this backports issue, and for another problem with some piece of hardware needing a custom-compiled module (which I don't want overwritten!). @pablomme: Thanks a lot for your suggestion. Finally I found a version of backports that works: 2.6.27-7-generic=2.6.27-7.4 . Summing up, each and every one of the -proposed versions are broken, both 2.6.27-10.8 and 2.6.27-7.6 , with linux-image-generic 2.6.27-7.16 and 2.6.27-10.20 kernels respectively. I will try this one to see if the iwl3945 wifi works better (by now I'm not seeing the packet loss I'm used to and it associated fine, but I won't declare this a win yet until it gets more testing). Yes, sometimes backports are vital. For example, my friend have to choose between wifi and ethernet on his Dell Inspiron 640m: With LBM 2.6.27-7.6 and higher broadcom ethernet card works, but intel wireless does not, due to this bug. [Bug 294667] Re: Unkown symbol while loading iwl3945
> I am using wireless again, so if you do not need the backports, please remove them. Some people do need the backports, though, in which case the temporary solution is to stick to the 2.6.27-7.4 version as stated earlier. BTW, if you encounter a complete system freeze 5 minutes after starting a wireless connection (which happens only with particular networks), reinstall the backports :-) > I will try to debug this further now and get a backtrace, this is still necessary right? What do you want to get a backtrace of? You do a backtrace of a program when it crashes, to determine what it was doing when things went wrong. In this particular bug we don't have a crash. There is a mismatch between the symbols in the iwl3945 module and those in the kernel, so the kernel rejects loading the module (thankfully the kernel's smart; it could indeed load it and crash the entire machine!). That's pretty much diagnosed, the fix is to resynchronize the symbols referenced in the backports modules with those in the current version of the kernel, so we just need to wait for a developer in the kernel team to find some time to fix it. -- Unkown symbol while loading iwl3945 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/294667 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Sorry about that, I am just trying to help in debugging. What do you suggest? Not annoyed at all.. amused, if anything. I don't see how this data is particularly helpful, but supplying plenty of information is important in solving problems, so please do post any information that you think is useful. @Jisakiel: have you tried using the backports from intrepid-main instead of intrepid-proposed? Go to Synaptic, install the 2.6.27-7 kernel (if it's not installed already), then select the 2.6.27-7 backports, go to Packages > Force Version... and select the one from Intrepid (2.6.27-7.4). After installing, update /boot/grub/menu.lst so that the correct version is pre-selected (if you want -- else remember to select it in the grub menu). Reboot and enjoy. My iwl3945 works fine that way, as it did in Hardy. [Bug 294667] Re: Unkown symbol while loading iwl3945
Just for the record (as I understood that someone had it working in the report), with latest kernel as of "right now" from proposed (2.6.27-10.20 -generic) + latest backports for that kernel (2.6.27-10.8) I still get unknown symbol lbm_cw_print_ssid, though none of the others. I tried compat-wireless but they seem quite broken, as in "module dies sometimes and then cannot be removed", "suspend doesn't work", etc. With stock iwl3945 wifi works pretty bad, with around 30% packet loss in quite-optimal situations (and not working at all in my university, for instance). I got so tired from this (as my laptop is useless without wifi and none of the kernels I keep, nor zen-sources ones, seem to work properly) that I just installed fedora core 10 on a separate partition (where, for the record as well, wifi works wonderfully in their 2.6.27.5-117.fc10 kernel but I get some unrelated suspend / resume problems related to compiz). -- Unkown symbol while loading iwl3945 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/294667 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 294667] Re: Unkown symbol while loading iwl3945
Hi there, do you know how to add numbers to the comments in the launchpad gui? I had to count the permalinks in a text editor. Anyway, The difference between comment 34 and 35 is: lbm_cw_cfg80211 Are you annoyed by the amount of data? Sorry about that, I am just trying to help in debugging. What do you suggest? Anyway, I had some rather atypical stuff happening. Since I only use wireless through the Intel wireless card and 3 USB modem (which I am using right now) I could not connect to the internet for a while. I mistakenly judged that this bug was fixed as adding the backports and doing modprobe after 'root# dpkg-reconfigure linux-backports- modules-2.6.27-8-generic' did reveal the symbols errors, but did not make my wifi connection disappear. That happened only after rebooting, and is still not fixed yet. In contrast with the last time I experienced this bug, and also had the connectivity issues, I cannot restore this with '$ sudo apt-get remove linux-backports-modules-2.6.27-8-generic'. Maybe this is because apt-get build-dep linux-backports-modules-2.6.27-8-generic prompted me to install linux-headers-2.6.27-10-server, which I did. I have since removed both packages and ran root# dpkg-reconfigure -au. I have deconf configured to readline and -p low. I will search for other 2.6.27-10-server packages now and try to uninstall/delete them. I have just downloaded a lot of dbgsym's and will try to get a Backtrace of sudo nm-connection-editor. I get WARNING: resetting 'something' with page size more than zero is deprecated. Also one of the build-dep's of network-manager network-manager-gnome or gnome-keyring was automake1.9 I believe. This package is known to cause problems with installing build-dep's for virtualbox-ose. The problem is that there is specifically referred to automake 1.9 and not 'any automake'. I think installing backports may actually refer to this previous automake, and some program will not be able to use a later version of automake instead of that program. I think that program is gnome-keyring or gnome-keyring-daemon. I know this because I had 'sudo NetworkManager' access to gnome-keyring made subject to a password, which is my old gnome-session (and sudo) password. I changed this login password, but I still had to give in the old password for access to the gnome-keyring for NetworkManager, after startup. I can now start both NetworkManager and gnome-keyring, as well as nm-applet, dbus-launch, nm-connection-editor and gnome-keyring- daemon. I am no longer prompted for my old password however. I think that is ample proof. Anyway, I also got the compiz.real bug again, which is still related to the Alsa mixer I see, but that is possibly not causally related to this bug (but maybe also to automake?). Please pardon me also for the referral to the UFW kernel crash bug. I saw the same output in dmesg in Intrepid, but not in Jaunty. I guess it is unrelated. [Bug 294667] Re: Unkown symbol while loading iwl3945
Sorry, my previous comment is nonsense. If you want to circumvent the problem, do one of: 1] If you don't need the backports module, remove it. 2] If you do need the backports module, either: 2a] Downgrade your kernel image package to 2.6.27-7, install version 2.6.27-7.4 of the backports, and pin the version of these packages in Synaptic (Package > Fix Version). 2b] If you really want to stick to kernel 2.6.27-8, install version 2.6.27-7.4 of the linux-backports-modules-2.6.27-7-generic package, pin it in Synaptic, and also install package linux-backports-modules-intrepid, which will install version 2.6.27-8.7 of the backports. Then on a terminal type: 1$ cd /lib/modules/2.6.27-8-generic/ 2$ sudo mv updates backup_updates 3$ sudo ln -s ../2.6.27-7-generic/updates which effectively replaces one with the other so that Ubuntu "believes" it's using 2.6.27-8 but actually it's using 2.6.27-7. It's ugly, yes. Then reboot your computer and you should have stable wireless again. Chances are this may not work if another backported module is in use which clashes with the ABI of 2.6.27-8, but iwl3945 seems OK about this -- the module has certainly loaded, I'm using it at the moment. If kernel 2.6.27-9 is released without solving this issue you may need to repeat the commands above, replacing the "8" in step 1 with a "9". But I certainly hope it is solved by then. Hope this helps. -- Unkown symbol while loading iwl3945 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/294667 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 295597 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/295597 This bug shouldn't be marked as duplicate, more likely it's the other way around.
