Your machine is already swapping quite heavily even without gedit, so I
don't think that there is any bug with gedit here. You just don't have
enough RAM to open that large file.

Yes, 512MB is sufficient for running Ubuntu, but I think you're probably
going to struggle with Gedit on files this size. When you try to open
it, could you please post the output of :
free -m
