Unfortunately it seems this bug is still an issue. Can you confirm this
issue exists with the most recent Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release -
http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-9.04-desktop . If the issue remains
in Jaunty, Please run the following command from a Terminal
The 8139 driver was installed (and the Realtek card working as eth0) when I
tried the modprobe eepro100.
I won't have access to the machine again until after thanksgiving, but I'll try
it with an 8.10 liveCD when I'm back.

When you tried to 'sudo modprobe eepro100' was that with or without the
8139cp driver installed?
Regardless, I'll need you to first confirm if this is an issue with the
most recent Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release? The reason I ask is we need to
confirm if this has been resolved in
