I can understand that GDM do not allow people to login in if they have
no valid shell, but at the moment you can do this, moreover you can
start shell!

It's not a consistent behaviour of GDM (or saying more Gnome), what is a
bug. (I changed the description to better describe the problem).

BTW. It might make some confusion if you are using NIS to login. You
have valid login but you don't login to one of the system because shell
of your choice is not there.
