[Bug 308300] Re: kernel panics when using mouse in Firefox
I seem to be having the same issue as described above. As I am browsing in Firefox and start to sue the middle wheel button to scroll up or down in a website the entire system just locks up and I get no response and am forced to manually restart the machine. [Bug 308300] Re: kernel panics when using mouse in Firefox
For information: I just installed Opera browser (some people suggested it was more stable). I booted kernel 2.6.24-21 (without backports) & opened only Opera. In less than 5 minutes of intensive browsing (Google News pages) I got the usual kernel panic. So I guess the title of this bug report is probably misleading. [Bug 308300] Re: kernel panics when using mouse in Firefox
Does that mean: Nobody is going to find the root cause of my (our - there are lots of us...) problem, using hardware purchased specifically because it was claimed to work with Linux? There is no logical reason to hope or expect future releases (Intrepid & later) to fix a problem which has not been analysed? I will probably need to install backports packages for every kernel update in future? A quick browse through related forum threads suggests that Intrepid does not fix similar problems & I am not anxious to "upgrade" any earlier than I have to, as every "upgrade" brings new problems. I would have felt much better if the response had been something like: "OK - this is a known conflict between XXX & YYY which will be fixed by ZZZ which will be introduced in 2010 - 2011". Thanks anyway - I do appreciate that there are a huge number of bugs for you good volunteers to fix! -- kernel panics when using mouse in Firefox https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/308300 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 308300] Re: kernel panics when using mouse in Firefox
Hi 2CV67, the linux-backports-modules package contains updated drivers to which likely contains additional fixes to resolves issues like the one you are seeing. You should continue to just keep using the linux-backports- modules package if it resolves the issue you are seeing. The updated drivers will not be backported to the main kernel package - hence the reason we have a linux-backports-modules package. So for now I'm marking this "Fix Released" against linux-backports-modules package and "Won't Fix" against the linux package. Also, there is an even newer release, Intrepid Ibex 8.10, which you may want to give a try as well. You should be able to test via a LiveCD. Thanks. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New => Won't Fix ** Also affects: linux-backports-modules-2.6.24 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: linux-backports-modules-2.6.24 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Fix Released -- kernel panics when using mouse in Firefox https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/308300 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 308300] Re: kernel panics when using mouse in Firefox
I just confirmed the bug by booting 2.6.24-21 kernel (without backports...) & it froze in Firefox in less than 1 minute. 2.6.24-22 kernel (with backports...) has been working with no problem for 12 days. 2.6.24-19 kernel (with backports...) worked with no problem for 3 months. So I can easily reproduce this thing. Is there any useful information I can provide? [Bug 308300] Re: kernel panics when using mouse in Firefox
Thanks for your rapid response. Please be patient as bug reporting is all new to me! I agree this is not a specific Firefox problem. It seems to be a RT2561 problem but appears mostly in Firefox. I just ran the items you requested, this with 2.6.24-22 kernel & with backports module installed. This configuration does not crash. For information, all the crashes without backports modules, with kernels -19 & -21 & -22 involve Caps Lock & Scroll Lock flashing, no keyboard action, no REISUB etc, no mouse movement, but screen contents unaffected from before freeze. Let me know if I can provide more information. I can almost certainly recreate the problem by booting to -21 kernel without backports, but don't know how to get any useful information out of the system. This is the output of uname -a: ch...@desktop:~$ uname -a Linux DESKTOP 2.6.24-22-generic #1 SMP Mon Nov 24 18:32:42 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux ch...@desktop:~$ I have attached dmesg.log but can't seem to attach more than one at a time so will attach the rest to a new message. ** Attachment added: "dmesg.log" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/20476714/dmesg.log -- kernel panics when using mouse in Firefox https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/308300 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 308300] Re: kernel panics when using mouse in Firefox
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I guess this should be a bug in the kernel (linux). If only firefox would crash, you could just restart firefox and go on. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information. Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team: 1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture. 2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report. 3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report. For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel- related bug reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance! ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: firefox-3.0 => linux ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- kernel panics when using mouse in Firefox https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/308300 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
