I think I have the same problem. Also running Jaunty. I can add a different thing: If I select text (for example in a terminal) and I replace my finger on the touchpad while holding the left button down (which means I want to keep selecting text) it'll paste the already selected text at the current cursor location. The selection is gone. So I guess it ends the selection if I remove my finger from the touchpad. Oh, one more thing - in Firefox, in most of the cases, clicking with the left touchpad button opens link in new window.
