The problem turn out to be: files in /var/lib/dpkg/info/ reference a
part of the scilab package which doesn't exist: scilab.star
Solution: in /var/lib/dpkg/info/postinst /var/lib/dpkg/info/prerm and
/var/lib/dpkg/info/postrm, rename any mentions of scilab.star to scilab.
Results: With sudo dpkg
Hello, I am running Intrepid on amd64, and I am having the same problem.
I have successfully (it seems) installed sivp 0.5.0 and scilab 5.1.1,
scilab detects sivp 0.5.0 and it works. But Synaptic detects sivp
0.4.3-3 and whenever I install anything i get
Setting up sivp (0.4.3-3) ...
dpkg: error
This bug was fixed in the package sivp - 0.5.0-1ubuntu1

I get this too, a warning comes up everytime I add/remove/update
packages, and I can't remove sivp to make it stop. Jaunty alpha6.
