It seems to me like this has reportedly been fixed in BIOS changes or
caused by other hardware issues, so I'm going to close this as Invalid
(because we don't know exactly what fixed it), as well as since this is
an old bug.
Marco, if you're still seeing this issue on newer releases than 10.10
Hi, I apparently solved the problem (Ubuntu 10.10, but it had the same
problems on 10.04, Athlon x2 5000 Nforce2 machine) working on bios
settings: switched the sata configuration to AHCI. Previously i tested
many solutions suggested in various forums, like switching the boot
order (first dvd
Unfortunately I don't have any jumpers on my CD and I can't configure
it.

Installed Ubuntu 8.10, updated to latest available revisions without
issue, DVD drive present during install, after required reboot, no dvd
drive, no devices present in /dev that would lead to an optical drive.

I don't think so. If I only setup windows and no grub2 in mbr ,
everything is all right. But then I install ubuntu with grub2 in mbr
,the LED of DVD is lighting until I shut the laptop down . And whichever
OS I am leaded in from grub2 , I can't find my DVD driver.

This is similar to Bug #374999. In any event. My new install of Jaunty
has no CD/DVD drive now. I've re-installed three times now and tried
everything but can't get it to work. Disabling the CD/DVD drive does not
work. Changing BIOS settings does not work.
LILO does not work. Post #11 is correct,
We had the same thing and the solution was to disable the CD/DVD drive
in the BIOS as it is giving odd data to grub which just dumps it. If
you disable it the DVD magically comes back when grub scans for it (from
what I understand.)

DVD missing after install
Same problem with new MALIBAL satori.
After installing 9.04 dual boot the CD/DVD is missing in XP partition.
The optical drive works in Ubuntu but it not in the XP partition. In
fact; the CD/DVD drive is not even listed device manager now or listed
in the registry.
Many posting on the internet
If anyone comes up with a solution please let us know. We have switched
to Ubuntu in our office but this issue is rubbing our CIO the wrong way.

I'd rather a slower/longer boot time, than to miss an essential piece of
