Can't reproduce...
My hardy rc-update.d (from sysv-rc 2.86.ds1-14.1ubuntu45.1) accepts the
multiuser argument:
t...@hardy-test:~$ update-rc.d --help
usage: update-rc.d [-n] [-f] basename remove
update-rc.d [-n] basename defaults|multiuser [NN | sNN kNN]
update-rc.d [-n] basename
