alsamixer appears to work fine. gnome-volume-control never appears on the panel and will never start from a menu. sometimes it will start from a terminal window sound usually plays when gdm starts and on login, but not always mplayer has regular sound problems, only playing well on about every third start. mplayer often gets confused on resume from pause (last time it complained about "[AO_ALSA] Write error: Broken pipe") on suspend often a creepy, annoying whining sound is emitted from the speakers until resume hope this helps.
