I've found a simple fix for this in Karmic Ubuntu 9.10 - Touchfreeze is in the Synaptic Package Manager. Once installed, it allows you to switch the touchpad on and off while typing - and if you're using a mouse, there's then no problems either ... -- Cursor problem
