Well I'll be... I thought I already had it there... but I didn't. So I
just added the indicator applet to my toolbar, and now the volume
control is back. (Along with some other chat indicator that I don't
want, but that's a separate issue.)
Thank you for your help. This bug is solved for me.
The volume applet on Karmic was changed by the volume indicator in Lucid.
Can you add the indicator applet to the panel?

I have this identical problem, after upgrading to Lucid. The volume
control was there in Karmic; in Lucid, it's not.
Other users on the same host do see their volume controls.
