I'm unfortunately not seeing anything in terms of a kernel oops or panic
in the log file you attached. Just curious if you are able to reproduce
this issue every time you try to open the file? If so, would you be
able to ssh into the machine after it appears to freeze and grab dmesg
output?
This sounds like a kernel bug of some sort. OOo should not be able to
completely crash a system.
