I tried applying that patch to the evolution-indicator source in Lucid, but it
doesn't work, in fact I breaks the code. I looked at the patch, but I can't

@Taylor: I think the problem is that I hard coded in the path to
evolution when I was using exec, but I was using a custom build of
evolution so the path may not be the same. I'm using execlp now, so

just as a proof of concept I've modified the source for the applet so
that evolution runs hidden in the background, even when there is no
visible window. Its a hack, and just mainly meant to show that it can
be done, but I've attached the .diff for evolution-indicator.c as a
curiosity. (PS.

I was using Alltray in 8.10 as a workaround, but it is just lame to use
third party tools to bring functionality that should be there in the
first place.
