idem dito gutsy tribe 3
I haven't installed gtk-qt-engine so I couldn't delete it. I work standard on
Gnome.

deletion of .gtk files did not solve the problem !

I don't know exaclty when this problem started but, I think before the
gutsy OOo snapshot release

[Bug 41831] Re: Openoffice in dapper has difficulties to redraw menus and icons

2007-09-09 Thread Denis
The problem might be XGL related.
I found out that when I start gnome trough terminal by typing 'startx' rather
than starting gdm and then starting gnome the problem is over. Also compiz is
working again

This could be driver related. I'm using NVIDIA binary 9631 (manual
install) since this is the lates driver who supports my (old) geforce 4
mx 440 card.

2007-08-12 Thread Michael Blakeley
This also seems to affect the gutsy OOo 2.3-snapshot release
(2.3.0~src680m224-1ubuntu2 x86-64). Uninstalling gtk-qt-engine (0.8~svn-
rev36-2ubuntu2) works around the issue, but affects the appearance of
other applications (thunderbird, firefox). In case it's relevant, I'm
using kwin-baghira 0.8-1.

Same here with the Gutsy Tribe 3 updated version of OOo. I just reread
the original description though and it's not the same for me, my buttons
fail to redraw after the highlighting applied as the mouse rolls-over,
no grey fields here.

I had the same bug on feisty with openoffice.org 2.2.0-1ubuntu4. I
upgraded kubuntu from from edgy and then switched to gnome. Renaming the
.gtk* files in the home directory fixed the problem.

[Bug 41831] Re: Openoffice in dapper has difficulties to redraw menus and icons

2007-05-07 Thread iGadget
The problem is getting worse. This morning the problem was there again on my
laptop which I use for work, so I checked for .gtk* files in my home dir. They
existed (again) so I renamed them to *.old. Then I shut down the OOo
quickstarter as before, restarted OOo... But the problem remained!
I then tried to move the .gtk* files to another directory, repeating all other
steps after that... but no success.

So right now I'm stuck with a seriously degraded OOo installation. Kind
of frustrating when you're bragging all day long to your colleagues
about all the splendour of FLOSS/Ubuntu... :(

In short - just removing .gtk* files from your home dir doesn't seem to
fix this problem.

according on iGadget on irc, he cannot see this behaviour on a feisty

driver, which actually works for most people?

[Bug 41831] Re: Openoffice in dapper has difficulties to redraw menus and icons

2007-05-07 Thread iGadget
As noted on irc (and in this thread a few posts above), It's a fresh Kubuntu
install with additionally ubuntu-desktop installed. New user, free drivers... I
can imagine the problem not occuring when just using only a kubuntu or an
ubuntu live cd, as I think my problem has to do with both KDE/qt and Gnome/gtk
being installed.
If I'm the only one experiencing this, I'd just like to state out I got this
problem doing only standard stuff any ordinary user could/would. So
potentially, everybody could experience my problem.

I will however, create a(nother) new user and see if the problem persists.
I'll also check if the problem remains when using KDE instead of Gnome.
A reinstall of the system would take me too much time right now, but I'll try
to figure out if I can replicate the problem when installing kubuntu-desktop on
any other of my ubuntu machines.

Matthias,

Removing the gtk-qt-engine package seems to have solved the problem.
So the problem is in fact somehow related to some incompatibilities between qt
and gtk?

done anything strange at all with it (yet).

[Bug 41831] Re: Openoffice in dapper has difficulties to redraw menus and icons

2007-05-04 Thread iGadget
I can confirm this bug still being present in Feisty, although it manifested
itself only after a while.
Feisty is installed here from a clean Kubuntu install, after which the
ubuntu-desktop package was installed and gdm+gnome+metacity became the default
environment (the reason why I installed it like this is IMHO irrelevant to this
bugreport, however if anyone wants to know I'll happily elaborate).

First I thought this problem had something to do with the desktop effects I had
enabled, but turning them off didn't fix the problem.
Renaming any .gtk* files in my home dir and then shutting down the OOo
quickstarter did fix the problem.

It seems that these .gtk* files are generated after a while and are
causing problems. Which program/proces creates these files and why? My
desktop seems to be happy without them (as a matter of fact, it seems to
be better off without them!), so why generate them in the first place?

I also created a theora/ogg video showing the problem clearly, if
anyone's interested.

[Bug 41831] Re: Openoffice in dapper has difficulties to redraw menus and icons

2006-09-27 Thread Elliot Winkler
I experienced the same problem. When OOo first came up, buttons and
menus appeared normally. However, as soon as I click on a section on the
menu bar (e.g. Format), every section except Format disappeared.
Further, when I moused over each of the entries in the menu, only the
entry under the mouse was visible -- everything else had disappeared.
Same thing for buttons -- only the button under the mouse was visible.
Moving the gtk* files solved the problem, for whatever reason.
