This happens if Enable network access to local sound devices is
enabled on the desktop and Make discoverable network sound devices
available locally is enabled on the laptop.  If I disable either one of
these, the bandwidth hogging goes away.

Once the server is running (because I've logged into the other computer
over NX), the bandwidth of both computers jumps up, even with no audio
playing.  /usr/bin/pulseaudio is using 180 KB/sec.

More information is needed for anyone to diagnose/fix this bug.

Please explain how you've setup your home server.  Also if you could
post the appropriate logs of activity on your network, that would be
helpful.
