[Bug 42387] Re: ipw2200 module can't be reloaded if its status was set to 2
I'm going to close this bug for now since there wasn't any response to the last inquiry. If you are still experiencing issues, please test with the Hardy Heron Alpha release which is currently under development. Hardy contains an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If this bug still exists, please open a new bug report against the 'linux' package. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . [Bug 42387] Re: ipw2200 module can't be reloaded if its status was set to 2
This was rejected because the original path to get the card into the problematic state was removed in 2.6.20. However, there are other ways to get into this state (card overheating, machine suspending) so the driver still needs to be fixed in 2.6.20. (Note that even rebooting does not help to resolve this.) ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.20 (Ubuntu) Status: Rejected = Unconfirmed -- ipw2200 module can't be reloaded if its status was set to 2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/42387 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 42387] Re: ipw2200 module can't be reloaded if its status was set to 2
I can't test this at the moment: The unload/reload trick didn't work. My Knoppix CD, that has previously been successful in waking the device up had gotten damaged from sitting in the drive, so that would not boot. The strange thing is that when I booted with the 2.6.20-lowlatency kernel, udev saw no reason to load the ipw2200 module. When I loaded it manually it reported no errors, but also did nothing. I am hesitant to report this as a bug, because of the uncertain hardware state that I am in, but could someone else please test the ipw2200 module with that kernel? Anyway: Right now I can't get the device up, so therefore I can't test whether I can make it survive a suspend/resume. Does anyone have any dirty tricks up their sleeve on how to get the thing working temporarily, so I can test it? I don't have any Windows... -- ipw2200 module can't be reloaded if its status was set to 2 https://launchpad.net/bugs/42387 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 42387] Re: ipw2200 module can't be reloaded if its status was set to 2
I've noticed a few things: - At home, the wireless card fails each time I transfer a big file (more than 300 MB through SSH) from other computer. I've got a Zyxel Prestige 650HW router with WEP enabled and signal quality is about 50/100 (obtained with iwconfig). - At my university I can transfer a few big files before the fail. There are Cisco APs and we use Cisco VPN to get Internet access. - The card also fails using an ad-hoc connection. - I think that the card can fail due to hot, because in ac-less places it fails earlier. - I've seen other computers with ipw2200 and they doesn't fail. I've got other laptop with ipw2200 that the only thing it does is to reset firmware (saw in dmesg) a few times when a big file is transfered. - I think that the fail comes when the card should be resetted. - I've not tried to transfer any big file in Windows... I think I should do it. That's all by the moment. ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.15 (Ubuntu) Status: Unconfirmed = Confirmed ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.17 (Ubuntu) Status: Unconfirmed = Confirmed -- ipw2200 module can't be reloaded if its status was set to 2 https://launchpad.net/bugs/42387 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 42387] Re: [Bug 42387] Re: ipw2200 module can't be reloaded if its status was set to 2
the bug occurs if ipw2200 module is unloaded when the file /sys/class/net/ethN/device/power/state contains the state 2 (I think it is a sort of suspend). This state is changed when I hit my laptop wireless hotkey. when I try to do modprobe ipw2200 the module won't load because of this error -5. the proble is that when the module is unloaded I havo no more the directory /sys/class/net/ethN/device/power/ and so re-hitting the hotkey have no effect. I should manually go to the directory pointed by that symlink, which is /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1e.0/:02:02.0/power and chance status to 0. after this actions the module will load. But it's not normal in my opinion. note that when suspending the module gets unloaded, and if it had been switched off pressing the hotkey (and not using the decumented method, which is the file /sys/class/net/ethN/device/rf_kill) this problem will occur! -- ipw2200 module can't be reloaded if its status was set to 2 https://launchpad.net/bugs/42387 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

wait wait wait! If the user switched it off he doesn't want it to be switched on at the module reload.
