Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

While running on a normally stable system, after a few days of being
logged in, gnome-panel will freeze (no un-hide of menu bar, bitmaps on
top menu are frozen, no pull-down menus). Widgets inside the panel
still work, such as the system monitor graphs. right-clicking the
menubar does not work.

Meanwhile, it's deadlocking one of my CPUs, growing its memory
continuously until it gets up to 4+GB and my machine starts swapping.

While gnome-panel is locked, most windows experience glitching in the
draw routines. firefox displays bitmaps from windows on different
desktop panels, mosaic'd into different spots on different webpages.

gnome-panel killed restores normal behavior, but only for a few hours
the first time. for an hour the second time. a few minutes the fifth
and sixth times. After the seventh or eight kill, behavior is normal
for only a few minutes, if that, then it's resumption of deadlock &
memory leak.

I have the notification library fix from Ted Gould's PPA installed.

Also, skype might be causing some of the interaction here. Something is
tickling my mind about how this may happen more often with a
notification icon updating skype's menubar bitmap.
