For me, changing the default sample rate to 44100 and setting it to 'lock' at this rate fixed any crackling or 'hot' audio. (Using Ubuntu 10.10 beta, audiophile 2496 / ICE1712 card). Can you reproduce this symptom using the Lucid Beta 1 live cd?
