I duplicated this by: - starting gnome-shell with gnome-shell --replace - starting gtk-recordmydesktop At this point the top bar disappeared. Started gnome-system-monitor to kill gtk-record-my-desktop. Desktop recorder stopped, but the bar is still missing. Dunno why, but I attempted gnome-shell --replace again.
