It's interesting that Xubuntu worked and Ubuntu didn't, since they're
supposed to be pretty much exactly the same at that stage of the
installation process.
Can you test with Ubuntu 6.10 and confirm whether this problem persists?
Can you also check your Ubuntu installation CD for defects? I see
I don't have access to that laptop anymore, and so I cannot test with
6.10. Unfortunately, I don't know for sure which Ubuntu CD I had used
for installing (or whether I still have it), so I cannot test it for
defects either. Sorry that I cannot help here.

Hi Oliver, no problem. I'm going to mark this as resolved, since a user
has reported [1] that installation works fine on Ubuntu 6.06, and also
by the Ubuntu Laptop Testing team [2].
