still seeing problem in 14.04, nm-applet only appers if I run it from
root `sudo nm-applet`, tried every solution I could find, none of them
helped

As a fast workaround, I add moving the notification area to the bottom
panel and to the top again, without releasing it (or vice-versa if you
already have it on the bottom panel).

Hi,
I actually just deleted the nm-applet folder under
/homefolder/.gconf/apps, and everything started to work fine.
I did this on two systems so far, and it worked.
Hope this also works with others.

I found workaround on forums:
Alt+F2 and type
nm-applet --sm-disable
It is the same command as for item Network Manager in gnome-session-
properties window.
But it is NOT the solution!

Karmic, 32 bits, wired connection. Same problem.
Problem disappeared 3 days ago, maybe after updates, maybe after that :
- DO NOT rename your connection ('Auto eth0')
- DO NOT remove the 'Available to all users'
Can you try and confirm?

This problem suddenly disappeared with me, and I have no idea how.
I have no idea if it was from updates or so on.
However, just in case it is relevant, I currently use the following kernels:

Removing then adding back notification aera or killing then reload nm-
appplet works until next reboot or relogin.

No I do not have any link to nm-applet in ~/.config/autostart . However in my
case the easiest way to get the icon working is to remove the notification area
from the top panel and then add it back.

restarting that helped. Can you check your ~/.config/autostart folder
and see if there is a link to nm-applet or network manager in there?
To me the problem almost seemed to be caused by nm-applet attempting to
start up multiple
If you remove and re-add the notification area this makes the icon
display as well. I've got this happening on two PC's that have been
running Ubuntu since Karmic 5. It did previously display properly until
Beta releases started happening I believe.
