The problem should have gone away: I have repeated the test case on the
same machine (altough the configuration has been changed) using Intrepid
Alpha 4 and nothing wrong happened.

Note to Kernel Team: The kernel.org bug (#5945) was marked invalid, however it
appears from the bug commentary that it wasn't invalid. The problem had gone by
kernel2.6.18 so the bug appears to have been abandoned.
