I cleaned my akonadi settings upgraded to the new package and run kontact.
At first it complained and showed problems in the dbus registration too but
after the migration assistant kicked it it worked!

It works for me as well (both kopete and korganizer). Just upgraded
akonadi-server.

Same problem here after upgrading to Karmic. Problem is caused by Jaunty
installing sql 5.0 but not selecting the MySql meta package. Therefore
MySql is not updated to 5.1 during the upgrade to Karmic and Akonadi
fails to start.
Simple selecting the mysql-server package will fix the problem.
Yes, this helped me, too. So it seems to be a missing or wrong
depenency.

We are really in a tough spot here. Forcing 5.1 is not nice for those
people who need mysql 5.0 installed, but apparently akonadi really does
need 5.1.
