I have tried to compile 2.6.33-rc8 with the patch that records the batchbuffer, but unfortunately it doesn't boot at all. I don't know what I did wrong. There was a chance it would fix it, but it was good to know either way. It turns out that the batchbuffer dumps with current kernels are not useful anymore [1]. They would need a kernel patch [2], and I haven't been able to package a kernel with that patch yet. There is a patch upstream to libdrm that should fix many issues like this one. I have added this patch to the Lucid version of libdrm and uploaded it to my PPA: https://launchpad.net/~gomyhr/+archive/standard . There are two things I can think about right now that may be of additional value to the developers: 1. On https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze I have added information about how to use the DebugFlushCaches option which may make the batchbuffer dumps more readable for the developers. You can add this option to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and upload the next batchbuffer dump to the upstream bug report directly, noting that this one is with the DebugFlushCaches option. 2. Trying to exclude some subsystems. For example, if the freezes continue without desktop effects enabled and without any 3D programs or -screensavers, we can exclude that the bug is in the 3D-acceleration part of the driver stack. There is a list of xorg.conf option at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze#Narrow%20Subsystem%20it%20Occurs%20in and I can probably add the Tiling option to that list. You can upload any additional batchbuffer dumps to the upstream bug report instead of here from now. xXPenGuiNxx, sorry for not getting back to you before. It looks like the kernel is an important component to consider for these freezes. Could you do one of the two things (I would prefer the first option, but the second option may be easier for you if you are depending on having a relatively stable system): 1. Upgrade/install Lucid. Then we can verify that the freezes also happen there. A batchbuffer dump from Lucid with xorg-edgers would be great. Possibly also with kernel 2.6.33-rc5, but the standard Lucid kernel should also be okay. Note that if you have space, you may install Lucid on a separate partition and keep using our Karmic partition if something goes wrong with Lucid. 2. Install the latest mainine kernel from [1], (see also [2]). Currently it is v2.6.33-rc5. There may have been fixes in the kernel that stops the freezes. If not, a batchbuffer dump from running with this kernel would be great. Daniel, we (and more importantly, upstream) have a policy of only one reporter per bug report. This is because xorg-bugs that look exactly the same can have different causes. It soon gets confusing when we have files from different reporters in the same bug report, especially if it turns out that the logs are incompatible. We appreciate your information, but we would prefer it in a separate bug report. If the issues turn out to be the same, it can be marked as a duplicate, which means that we have two linked bug reports of the same issue, but it is easy to keep track of which files come from where. For both of you, it would actually be nice if you could look at bug 447892, comment 23.
