Thank you for posting this bug.
Regarding poor performance when 2/2 cores set to VM, this is expected
b/c your host if fighting your guest for the same resources, slowing
performance of both.
The performance issues regarding timer frequency are resolved by using
Lucid and latest virtualbox-ose.
Maybe I found the problem.
Altough I am using the 32 bit version of Karmic, I have been experiencing
freezes or extremely slow performance with Virtualbox running XP. For the first
couple of week, I had no problems. So maybe it all started when I activited the
Compiz effects. I have reseted the
I had the same problem as KeithFisher in comment #3. Performance of my WinXP
guest was bad when using dual CPU instead of one.
Workaround at http://forum.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7t=24959#p114432
helped me. I lost benefit of ACPI and multi CPU, but WinXP is running faster
than before
Since this issue doesn't depend on Windows XP being run inside a virtual
machine, I tested some free operating systems:
Host: MacBook Pro 4,1, Core2 Duo T8300, 4GB RAM
Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit running kernels:
2.6.31-14-generic (*)
2.6.31-14-server (*)
2.6.31-15-generic
@Shareef Jalloq: In order to install a newer kernel package from lucid,
you'll have to do the folowing:
(1) Add lucid to your /etc/apt/sources.list or better a file in
/etc/apt/sources.list.d, e.g.:
# ubuntu standard repositories
deb http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid main
deb-src
Mario - or anyone else - can you detail how you go about getting this
kernel please? All the documentation I've found so far is out of date
and doesn't work as advertised.
For example, the commands in the wiki here,
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelGitGuide, for getting a kernel
release
I have tried the kernel release v2.6.32-020632-generic from the Ubuntu Kernel
PPA and it does seem to help a lot without compiling yourself see link
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32/
According to the change log they did some work with the CPU time and other
related areas
Perryg - I previously installed VirtualBox using the x64 deb package.
Do you mean I have to re-install it using this method or that I need to
compile the source from the OSE version?

No no no.. I was saying that the way I found to compile that worked
easier for me was the link I sent since you stated it did not work for
you using the one provided. You decide which you like better.
I also state that you can simply install the v2.6.32-020632-generic from
the ubuntu kernel PPA
update: running 2.6.32-7-generic from lucid as host kernel now and
virtualbox (3.1 PUEL) works fine.

Ok so what is the solution right now because i can't work anymore with
virtualbox (i need that for some application that is not exist in
Ubuntu), xp is very too slow and this thing will force people to change
how they work with some virtual machine. I mean they will use a Dual-
boot instead a
The issue seems to be resolved by the latest (kernel) updates. At least,
as of yesterday, VirtualBox worked flawlessly. Also tested with the new
3.1.0 release.
My kernel: 2.6.31-15-generic x86_64

Sorry,
2.6.31-15-generic x86_64 is what I already had and is what is still installed.
(guests) XPpro sluggish, Vista all but useless, Karmic is even effected. All
of them 64 bit. Select (1) processor helps, but the timing is still off. You
can actually hear it in the start up sounds.
This
Update:
It seems the main reason for the slowness on Karmic is that Ubuntu
decreased the host timer frequency from 250Hz (Jaunty) to 100Hz
(Karmic). Supposedly making VirtualBox run really slow especially with
SMP.
So my question in the mean time is there a way to change this in Ubuntu
Karmic to
Disclaimer: I am really clueless on the subject. But I wonder if this is

I also can confirm this and it is worse on the latest kernel release.

I was able to select (1) processor with (2.6.31-14-generic) and it would work
close to native, but after the latest upgrade the sound and the performance in

Confirmed with VBox 3.0.12 also (with XP guest additions installed) on
Karmic. Switching from dual- to single-processor allocation for VBox
guest has dramatic, positive, performance effect. Saw no noticeable
difference in operating VBox with a generic or 'rt' kernel selected.

I can confirm that Windows XP guest running on Virtualbox (tested vith 3.0.10
and 2.2.4) under Karmic is extremly slow.
Seems that using rt kernel helps a littelbit.
