I notice that while the output from i8kctrl hasn't changed, its
different from /proc/i8k, even thought they should be the same, I think.
$ i8kctl
1.0 (null) C281Q61 62 -1 1 27660 57840 0 -1
$ cat /proc/i8k
1.0 A07 C281Q61 61 -22 1 27660 57840 -1 -22

I've upgraded my BIOS to the latest version (A07) and there's no change
in behavior. I'm officially out of ideas.
Please let me know what more info is needed.
