I used apport-collect-data on the client workstation, I don't know how
useful that is. The print server runs Ubuntu 8.04 and doesn't appear to
have the apport-collect tool.
However, here is the CUPS error_log on the print server after setting
the log level to debug. At 14:50:46 you can see the
(I'm Captain Chaos by the way. Somehow I ended up with two launchpad
accounts. I'll see if I can fix that.)

Here is the output of the printingbuginfo script on the print server. I
couldn't run it with -u, even though my printer is connected through
USB, because then it gave an error message: ls: cannot access
/dev/usblp*: No such file or directory.
