Public bug reported:

After installing kernel upgrades yesterday, all sound is suddenly not
working. I also installed mplayer yesterday; which I briefly uninstalled
today, at which point I had sound at the GUI login screen, but no video.
Shut down, rebooted, video back, but no sound.
