Two things: autosave should happen more frequently, and I don't think that autosave does anything on a document that does not yet have a saved name. (Open OOo fresh, start typing for a while. I just created a new document, typed in it and didn't save it. I let it sit for a few minutes so it would auto-save, then I intentionally crashed OOo (2.2) using bug #91759. Opening that file in OOo caused it to crash.
