Yet another update: After a kernel update from 2.6.32 to 2.6.35-22-generic, the nomodeset option is completely broken (X-server cannot set any reasonable mode any more) Now, I had to give up panning completely. In my current setup, I am using --scale on the smaller screen. This makes it just
