odd you ask this now
it started working good after some time
but i have upgraded to
ubuntu 10.04 lucid on that computer
gnome 2.30.2
kernel 2.6.32-28-generic
bad news its doing the same thing
smplayer works well
vlc works good too
totem is the same
1 more odd thing is i can not change any of
john, any news about this issue?

totem played good for 6 months or better
all i do is click on a video a blank page opens and a popup gome open they
open an just dont play but 1 fps
if i open the down load folder an click its the same
i can get them to open an play with vlc right till the end it hangs for 30
seconds before it
you might also want to try to reproduce the same on a newer release like
Karmic.
