Hello, I was able to solve the problem with a new installation. I saved mij /home partition and reinstalled it afterwards. So, for me, the problem is solved. Finally, I got it resolved and now I am getting everything back after suffering 1 whole day!! Here is my solution, it should not be an official solution, but just a workaround. Typically, I removed the update-fonts-dir in /usr/bin/* (or some other location, typically the default path). I just mv it to update-fonts- dir.old Then the update just went on with some warning message!! Later on, I found there is another update-fonts-dir under /usr/sbin... and these two are different, I don't have time to figure out more whether the /usr/sbin/ one is a higher version one. But it can make the installation moving forward. To make it safe, I reinstall the xfonts-base package (apt-get --reinstall install xfonts-base) and some other language support packages, restart X, then all those square box gone and things just look fine!! So in short, the workaround is: rename /usr/bin/update-fonts-dir (the one located by which) apt-get install -f apt-get --reinstall install xfont-base Hope it helps!! This looks like a topological sorting bug. Well, at least, it seemed that way when I solved it on my machine. This is how I got it to work: Try upgrading/installing xfonts-base first before installing the international fonts. sudo apt-get install xfonts-base Then proceed with installing the international fonts. Having about the same problem, only with updating package samba 3.0.22-1.ubuntu3.1 (dapper) to package samba 3.0.22-1.ubuntu3.2. Getting the following output from my terminal: (repairing, removing, reinstalling broken package through Synaptic doesn't work either). ... Me too, and my default cursor font 'cursor' got renamed (not by me) just before this happened for some reason, so X can't start with the error Can't find default font 'cursor'. This bug is critical.
