I can say that for edgy , this bug is obsolete for HP NX7010 users.
Default driver ati in edgy, can enable direct 3d.

IF YOU WANT BETTER PERFORMANCE FOR YOUR HP NX7010, INSTALL RADEON
DRIVERS, NOT FGLRX.

refer to : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver INSTEAD. For
tweaking part, the only valid value for Option  AGPMode is 1
(which is default). Otherwise you will get a dead blank screen.

Seems to be fixed in edgy. Default install works ok without referring to
restricted modules.

Hang on, if the user needs to manually enter modelines in xorg.conf,
this is still a bug (but with a known workaround).
