If only I had known that there was a simple fix! Over the five days and nights that the machine was down, I followed a lot of advice from a lot of people offering their well-intended and, of course, completely free support. OK, I have it working again after a few days of teeth-gnashing. I followed a combination of hints from http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=7295, Bug #32446, Bug #32123, and some others I've forgot. I removed all kernels, udev, initramfs- tools, then reinstalled udev, initramfs-tools by installing ubuntu- minimal, then installed linux-image-686 and it rebuilt the initrd which finally worked. The easiest thing would have been to do: sudo update-initramfs -u -k 2.6.15-25-686 Glad things are working for you now.
