[Bug 533261] Re: Indicator Applet should send scroll events

2010-03-20 Thread Sense Hofstede
Support for scroll events has been added to libindicator, indicator-
applet and indicator-sound, which I received as an update this morning.

I think that libappindicator will need an update to allow applications
to listen to scroll signals though. Also, we should come up with a
guideline for what is allowed for scroll activities since we want
consistency.

[Bug 533261] Re: Indicator Applet should send scroll events

2010-03-19 Thread Filip Milivojevic
This is a regression from previous versions of Ubuntu, and it is a
feature I'm using frequently.

I also think that this should be a low priority bug and not marked as
wishlist.

[Bug 533261] Re: Indicator Applet should send scroll events

2010-03-17 Thread Nicolas Albert
It's a huge regression for me. I hate to use Windows because I cannot
change volume with mouse wheel. It's a feature that I use and I
recommend that for several years.

Due to regression, I think this ticket must be a BUG and not in
whislist.

[Bug 533261] Re: Indicator Applet should send scroll events

2010-03-13 Thread Philipp Wendler
I would also like to be able to use mouse scrolling for changing the
volume etc.

What I would also suggest is being to able to middle-click on the icon.
Sound should then be immediately muted/unmuted, Rhythmbox should
pause/play the current song. This was possible before and could confuse
users after they switch to Lucid.

[Bug 533261] Re: Indicator Applet should send scroll events

2010-03-12 Thread Thomas Keene
Don't forget about the mouse-over popups that applications would give.
I like being able to check my laptop's battery percentage, what song I'm
listening to, and how long until my next typing break without having to
click anything. The way it is now, an extra click has been added to all
of those.

[Bug 533261] Re: Indicator Applet should send scroll events

2010-03-06 Thread Sense Hofstede
** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: indicator-applet
+ A reasonable amount of GtkStatusIcons were providing a service using the
+ scroll events, like volume changing (gnome-volume-control) and track
+ changing (Rhythmbox, Banshee, et al.). Indicator Applet doesn't support
+ this.

- I think a great usability tweak should be having the rhytmbox icon in
- the indicator applet to accept mouse wheel scrolling to change song
- (scrool up = next, scroll down= previous). Banshee does something
- similar and i got addicted to it. IMO it also makes the interface more
- accessible and quicker to be used.
+ It is suggested to allow applications to listen to a scroll event:
+ PROS:
+ * The event is currently not being used by something else.
+ * It is not visible whether an application uses scroll events, so it will
only be for power users that are aware of the functionality, leaving the tray
clean and simple for those who don't know
+
+ CONS:
+ * The Application Indicators were designed to only add a simple menu. This
adds more.
+ * The use of the scroll event will probably be inconsistent, one application
uses it for sound, the other for tracks, another for something completely
different. It might be better to couple the scroll event to the PulseAudio
representation of the application and only use it for audio.

[Bug 533261] Re: Indicator Applet should send scroll events

2010-03-06 Thread Davide Lasagna
About the second CON. I would accept the suggested inconsistency to have
this feature available. Every icon will have a different action, i think
its can be accepted. I think however that the action on the volume icon
is a must have. ( There is also a bug about this regression).
