This confirms another theory, the live-CD you burned was corrupt, and that this somehow corrupted the kernel module in use, effectively removing sound from your system. Interesting. When download of ISO image was finished, the MD5 check said the image was ok. When I burned the CD, the boot didn't worked after various attempts. So I used unetbootin to make a flash usb boot. And the system started very well, but with the problem of sound not working. So I installed it to hd and then sound worked well. Solved. Problem only happend when using live cd. When installed on disk, sound started working again. Please update to the latest kernel, 2.6.32-18-generic, and reboot. I'm just thinking loud here, but I find it strange that PciMultimedia claims that the snd-hda-intel module is in use, but we see no signs of this in dmesg.
