[Bug 555393] Re: ubuntu 10.04 beta desktop effects could not be enabled

2010-04-07 Thread Travis Watkins
Alright, it looks like we've found the problem: You're running a
failsafe GNOME session. Log out, click the Sessions button, and switch
it back to regular GNOME then login and enable compiz via the Appearance
UI.

 Bug description:
I have been running ubuntu 10.04 since alpha 2 and the compiz functions
have been working fine. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 with an Intel 965
graphics card. On updating to the beta version, compiz quit working! When I
open System-Preferences-Appearance and click on Visual Effects-Custom the
page blinks on and off several times and then I get the message Desktop
Effects could not be enabled and I have to use Force Quit to close the
Appearance tab. I have had 3D graphics enabled since Ubuntu 8.10 with no
problems on this dell inspiron and now compiz has suddenly quit working.

Alright, that doesn't actually show compiz even trying to start. Can you
run `compiz` from a terminal and paste the output here? I have a feeling
compiz is actually working but gnome-appearance-properties is messing
up.

shadyro...@dell-desktop:~$ compiz
Detected GNOME failsafe session.

Launching fallback window manager

This is all I could get. Nothing else would print out. If I try to close the
terminal I get this message-There is still a process running in this
terminal. Closing the terminal will kill it.

Hope this helps! Also, screensaver won't start. I don't know if that is
pertinent, but I believe some of that depends on compiz. Thanks for your
help. Charlie

2010-04-05 Thread eremit7
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important
for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn
more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a
bug in compiz.
(With many applications, you can report a future bug directly on the
appropriate package by opening the application's Help menu and choosing
Report a Problem. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs)
