Public bug reported: Some 3g modems have a mode in which it initially mounts as a CD-ROM drive with auto-start setup files to install drivers and related software on a Windows and/or Mac OS X based system. In Ubuntu this software is obviously not compatible. Ubuntu has drivers for many of these kind of 3g modems but since they mount as a CD-ROM drive instead of as a modem the proper drivers are not loaded. the work around is to install usb_modemswitch package, however it can sometimes conflict with some udev rules that were intended to do the same thing but was never maintained. I would recommend that bug fixers should speak with JoliCloud developers as they have seemed to fix this problem and JoliCloud is based on Ubuntu. I also know that udev and the kernel have their own method of fixing this but was never maintained, I am not sure which method Ubuntu uses.
